摘　　要：Environmental history rose in the 1960 s in the United States,and soon became one of the major new trends in international historical studies.This article analyzes,in a global perspective,the causes of the rise of environmental history,the process of its development,its theoretical construction,and the characteristics of its methodology.The article develops a new understanding of the concept of environmental history and points out that the progress of environmental hitory will promote the transition of human conception of history towards a new one which is based on the idea of sustainable development.The author also puts forward his own opinions on the problems existing in the three basic methods of studies of environmental history and on the prospect of the development of environmental history in China.
